Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:40 am, the temperature is 45 degrees.
Today will be mostly cloudy with a slight chance for sprinkles this afternoon. The high temperature will be in the low 60’s, falling to the low 30’s tonight. Tomorrow will be sunny with a high in the low 60’s dropping to the middle 30’s overnight.
Right now, the weekend looks great. It will be mostly sunny and warm Saturday and Sunday.
It will be cold tonight and tomorrow night. Water temperatures will fall. Fishing in the free flowing steams and rivers will be best later in the day tomorrow and Thursday, when the water is warmer.
Warmer air will move in Thursday and remain through the weekend.
Little River is flowing at 301 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.34 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 325 cfs. The water temperature is 54.1 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing near normal with some flowing slightly higher than normal. Water temperatures are ideal for trout feeding activity in the low to mid-elevation streams.
Trout are taking nymphs, wet flies, emergers and dry flies. I talked to Jack last night. He fished yesterday in the Smokies. He told me he caught most of his trout on a pair of Quill Gordon wet flies.
Fishing for stocked trout in the low elevation rivers is good. The stocked trout will respond to nymphs, wet flies, egg patterns, squirmy worms, caddis emergers, midge pupa and small streamers.
Fishing for smallmouth bass and rock bass is probably fair in the lowland rivers. Nymphs and streamers will likely work best. You might try foam floating flies or poppers to see what happens.
Breaks in the generation are planned at several dams today, giving tailwater anglers options for wading and boating. I saw pauses at eight dams in the region, including Wolf Creek Dam in Kentucky. That is a surprise. Many of the pauses will occur late this morning or this afternoon. Refer to the TVA website from the links below to see what is going on at your favorite tailwater.
Fishing is good, anglers are fly fishing and we are busy at the shop. After a couple of cold nights this week, warm weather is predicted through April 10th.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
