Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:40 am, the temperature is 35 degrees.
It will be sunny today with a high temperature in the low 60’s, and a low tonight in the middle to upper 30’s. Tomorrow will be sunny and warmer, with a high near 70 degrees and a low in the upper 40’s. Rain will move into the area Friday and continue overnight.
Little River is flowing at 275 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.28 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 314 cfs. The water temperature is 50.2 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains are flowing near normal. Water temperatures are falling. You may want to wait a while before going fishing this morning, after the water temperatures bottom out and begin to rise. I don’t know how low the temperatures will fall this morning. The streams may become chilly, in the high 40’s, even in the low elevations.
Fish in the low elevations where the water will be warmer. Nymphs or weighted nymph rigs may work best, at least early today. Trout may be taking wet flies, emergers or even dry flies later.
Fishing for stocked trout in the low elevation rivers will be good, especially later today. Sub-surface flies will likely work best for you. Try weighted nymphs, squirmy worms, egg patterns, caddis emergers, wet flies, midge pupa or small streamers.
Fishing for smallmouth bass and rock bass may be slow to fair in the lowland rivers today, depending on how cold the water becomes. Nymphs or streamers will be your best bet today.
There are long pauses in the generation planned at many dams today. You will not have a problem finding a tailwater to fish, whether you are wading or boating. Refer to the TVA website from the links below to find out what tailwater fishing option you have. There are many.
TVA and the Corps of Engineers have reached their lake level goals in many cases. Now, they will be gradually raising the lake levels to Summer pool. This has obviously been good news for tailwater anglers as generation schedules are becoming more favorable.
I ordered a big selection of the new Mustad Heritage fly tying hooks yesterday. They will probably be displayed and for sale in the fly tying department next week. Mustad discontinued their Signature Series hooks and most of them have sold out at the shop, giving us more space for the new hooks.
We have a huge selection of waders and wading boots, more than we have had in years. The storage room is packed. This was a strategic decision we made last Fall and it is paying off. This has been and will be a big year in the wading department.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
