Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:45 am, the temperature is 32 degrees.
Warmer air will move into the region. It will be sunny today with a high temperature in the low 70’s, whith a low tonight in the upper 40’s. We have a chance for rain tomorrow and a higher chance overnight. The high temperature will be in the low 70’s dropping to the upper 50’s overnight.
It will be breezy Saturday with rain predicted early in the morning. The high temperature will be in the low 70’s, falling to the middle 30’s overnight. Sunday will be sunny and warm with a high in the middle 60’s.
Little River is flowing at 242 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.19 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 372 cfs. The water temperature is 48.7 degrees this morning. Yesterday at this time, the water temperature was 50.2 degrees. The water temperature peaked yesterday at 52.5 degrees at 5:15 pm.
Streams in the mountains are flowing lower than normal. Water temperatures are plunging.
If you go fishing in the Smokies today, fish in the low elevations where the water is warmer. Fishing will be better when the temperatures bottom out and climb to 50 degrees or warmer. So, go later when the water is warmer. Today will be warmer than yesterday but the streams are starting out colder.
I talked to a customer yesterday who fished at Metcalf Bottoms on the East Prong of Little River. He told me the water temperature was 49 degrees and fishing for him was slow.
Weighted nymphs will work best for you early. You may want to try wet flies, emergers or dry flies later today.
Fishing for stocked trout in the low elevation rivers will be good today but better later when the water is warmer. Use sub-surface flies, including weighted nymphs, squirmy worms, egg patterns, caddis pupa or emergers, midge pupa or small streamers.
Fishing for smallmouth bass and rock bass in the lowland rivers will be slow early today but may improve later. Nymphs and streamers will likely work best.
There are pauses in the generation schedules at every TVA or Corps of Engineers dam I checked this morning. I looked at the schedules at ten dams. If you want to fish on a tailwater, today will offer you many options. Check the schedules on the TVA website from the links below and make your plan. There are opportunities for you whether you are wade or boat fishing.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
