Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:44 am, the temperature is 66 degrees.
I heard thunder at 4:15 am this morning. Right now, I can hear strong winds and rain. Some counties nearby were under a “Tornado Warning” until 5 am. We are under a “Tornado Watch” until 7:00 am this morning.
Showers and thunderstorms are possible this morning until 9:00 am with a slight chance for showers until 10:00 am. It will be sunny and windy today with a high temperature in the low to middle 70’s, falling to the middle 30’s overnight.
Tomorrow will be sunny with a high in the middle 60’s with light wind.
Little River is flowing at 225 cubic feet per second or 2.14 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 393 cfs. The water temperature is 54.7 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains are flowing lower than normal and at good fishing levels. The streams are warm. Trout will be active today, especially in the low elevations.
Fishing will be good. The problem today will be wind. Based on what I hear right now at our home, I would not want to be fishing in the forest. Newfound Gap Road from Gatlinburg to Cherokee closed last night due to the wind warning. Other roads may close today due to downed trees. Some streams may rise and become stained due to heavy rain in some thunderstorms.
If you go fishing in the mountains today, be aware that high winds are predicted. Weighted nymph rigs, wet flies, emergers, streamers and dry flies are good choices.
Fishing for stocked trout in the low elevations is good. Again, it is probably going to be windy all day. It is possible some rivers could be stained or flowing high. Try nymphs, egg patterns, squirmy worms, midge pupa, caddis emergers or streamers.
Fishing for smallmouth bass or rock bass in the lowland rivers is improving as the rivers warm. Some rivers could be stained today. Nymphs and streamers will work best.
There is no way I would be on a lake today in a boat, canoe or kayak.
There will be long breaks in the generation schedules at many dams today. If you are hoping to fish on a tailwater, you have a lot of options. Visit the TVA website from the links below to see what tailwater fishing opportunities are available for you today.
