Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:39 am, the temperature is 43 degrees.
It will be partly cloudy today with a high temperature in the upper 70’s, dropping to the low 50’s tonight. There is a chance for showers tonight.
Showers and thunderstorms are likely tomorrow and overnight. The high temperature will be in the middle 70’s with a low in the low 50’s overnight.
Saturday will be mostly sunny and very warm with a high in the low 80’s and a low in the upper 50’s.
Rain is likely Sunday.
Little River is flowing at 222 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.13 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 293 cfs. The water temperature is 54.1 degrees at the USGS gauge site near Townsend.
Streams in the Smokies are flowing near normal for this date. Water temperatures are good for trout activity in the low elevations. The streams will warm today and over the next two days. Fishing conditions are good. It may be overcast today which would be an excellent condition.
Trout are taking dry flies, nymphs and wet flies. Fish in the lower elevations early today where the water is warmer. You may fish in the higher elevations and do well later today and over the next few days.
Fly fishing for stocked trout is good in the low elevation rivers. Try nymphs or squirmy worms. If you are not catching trout, switch to smaller flies and lighter tippet. Try midge pupa. Or, give streamers a try.
Fishing for smallmouth bass in the lowland rivers is improving thanks to the warmer water temperatures. Nymphs and streamers will likely work best. Try foam floating flies or poppers.
If today turns out to be overcast at times, as predicted, this will be a good lake fishing day. Winds will be fairly calm. Cast streamers to the rocky banks and allow them to sink deeper as you retrieve slowly.
