Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. There was lightning flashing in the darkness as I prepared to write the fishing report this morning. Then rain here in Maryville. The radar showed it headed towards the mountains so fingers crossed that some falls on the creeks before it fades away.
Yesterday the mountains didn't receive anywhere near the amount of rain we were expecting. The thunderstorms didn't happen either. The next measurable rain won't be till next week. Water levels in the Smokies are still low for this time of year. This morning the gauge on Little River is reading 1.80 feet or 129 c.f.s. The daily normal is 231 c.f.s.
Water temperatures have been on a warming trend over the past week. This morning the gauge reads 59 F. The trout have been very happy with the temps.
Overall fishing has been good in the mountains recently. Anglers are fishing a combination of dries and nymphs depending on their preference. Productive patterns for top water have been tan to yellow in color and much smaller than would typically be used this time of year. Have some #16 and #18 flies in the box. Of course if you are going to fish a dry dropper rig your dry fly will need to be larger or atleast have good flotation.
Reports have been good from most streams in the Park. Water levels are low so the trout are extra spooky. Good presentations and stealth will be key. Since it is still Spring you have a ton of choices of where to go. If you want the hike and are looking to bring a brook trout to hand then strap on the hiking boots and head into the backcountry. If you aren't feeling like expending that much effort there is always miles of good fishing near the roadsides.
Dave Carson and Brian Courtney are working on scheduling a Beginner Fly Tying Class. We haven't normally done them this time of year but we've had several people ask. This is a one, full day class. It will be on a Saturday, date to be determined. The cost is $100 and includes everything you need for the day, even lunch. The classes are small with a limit of 4 students. Give the Shop a call or send an email to Dave@LittleRiverOutfitters.com
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
