Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:49 am, the temperature is 50 degrees.
It will be partly cloudy today with a high temperature in the middle to upper 70’s. We have a chance for showers tonight.
There is a chance for showers tomorrow with a high in the lower 70’s. The chance for rain continues Saturday night through Sunday night. Sunday’s high temperature is predicted to be in the middle 50’s.
Little River is flowing at 41 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.30 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 75 cfs. The water temperature is 57.6 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains are flowing very low. Water temperatures are within the trout’s preferred range at most elevations. Most trout are hiding in the broken water in pockets, runs, plunge pools and eddies. A dry and dropper rig is probably your best tactical choice, though weighted nymph rigs might produce as well.
Trout are actively feeding, but they are spooky due to the low water conditions. Try to stay hidden from the trout and downsize to light tippet.
Fly fishing for smallmouth bass in the lowland rivers is fair. Right now, water temperatures are fine. But, the rivers are flowing very low. Fish in the deeper pools with streamers or crayfish patterns. A foam floating fly or popper might work so try them too.
I think streamers or swimming nymphs will work best on the lakes. You might try foam floating flies or poppers. They might work. It will be partly cloudy today which is a positive lake fishing condition.
There are generation schedules you can work with at some dams if you are hoping to fish on a tailwater today. Check the TVA website to see what tailwater fishing opportunities you have today and plan accordingly.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
