Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:47 am, the temperature is 35 degrees.
It will be unseasonably warm in the Smokies through at least Thursday. We can expect high temperatures in the middle to high 70’s with lows in the 50’s. Friday and the weekend will be cooler. Rain should move into the area Thursday night and remain until Friday night.
We are all looking forward to the rain.
Little River is flowing at 42.4 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.29 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 144 cfs. The water temperature is 46.4 degrees this morning.
Streams in the Smokies are flowing very low. Water temperatures are chilly this morning but we will see some warming today. Most trout are holding in the broken choppy water. They are spooky.
Do everything possible to avoid being seen by the trout. Go later in the day when the water is warmer. Fish in the low elevations where the water is warmer. Use fine tippet. Concentrate on the broken water in pockets, runs, plunge pools and eddies. Nymphs will probably work best for you.
Fishing for smallmouth bass and other warmwater species is slow in the lowland rivers. Fishing may improve later today when the water is warmer. If you go, cast streamers in the deeper pools.
There are generation schedules at some dams you can work with today if you are hoping to fish on a tailwater. Check the TVA website to see what tailwater fishing options you have today.
Get out and enjoy these nice warm days while you can.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
