Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:48 am, the temperature is 31 degrees.
Today will be mostly sunny with a high temperature in the upper 50’s. There is a chance for showers this afternoon. Showers are likely tonight with temperatures dropping to the low 30’s. Rain may change to snow or a wintery mix in the high elevations tonight. Tomorrow will be mostly cloudy with a high in the low to middle 40’s, falling to the low to middle 20’s overnight.
Little River is flowing at 65.9 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.43 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 183 cfs. The water temperature is 45.7 degrees and falling this morning.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing lower than normal, though some are flowing right at normal for this date. Water temperatures are below the trout’s preferred range at all elevations this morning and falling.
If you go fishing in the Smokies today, wait a while for the water temperature to bottom out and begin rising. Fish in the lowest elevations where the water is warmer. The streams are flowing low and the trout are spooky. Do everything you can to avoid being seen by the trout. Nymphs will probably work best for you.
Fishing for stocked trout in the low elevations has been good this week. Visit the Gatlinburg Trout Facility Facebook page and you will see what I mean. CLICK HERE. Travis Williams and his team are doing an excellent job providing anglers with a great trout fishery in Gatlinburg. Next Friday, the regulations will change in Gatlinburg to Delayed Harvest status until Spring. All trout caught must be released during this time.
There are generation schedules at some dams that are reasonable for tailwater fishing. Breaks in the generation are occurring in the afternoon at several dams which is not ideal. Visit the TVA website to see what tailwater fishing options you have today.
Come by the shop this afternoon to watch a Free Fly Tying Demonstration presented by Kendall Mayers. Kendall is a professional fly fishing guide who works with Blackberry Farm and Blackberry Mountain. He is an excellent fly tyer and angler. Most of his guiding is for trout, but he enjoys fishing for warmwater and saltwater species. His free presentation will begin at 1:00 pm today and last for two hours. You do not need a reservation. Just show up at the shop.
