Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:55 am, the temperature is 18 degrees.
It will be sunny today with a high temperature in the low 50’s, dropping to only 30 degrees tonight. The warming trend continues tomorrow as it will be sunny with a high around 60 degrees and a low in the upper 30’s. Rain will move into the region tomorrow night and continue through the weekend.
Little River is flowing at 55.3 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.37 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 231 cfs. The water temperature is 37.9 degrees and falling this morning.
Streams in the Smokies are flowing low and very cold at all elevations. Water temperatures are way below the trout’s preferred range. For the most part, fishing for trout is slow and will be until the water warms.
If you go fishing in the mountains today, wait a while until it warms up some. Fishing may not improve but you will be warmer. It is going to be breezy today in the mountains so the wind chill index will be extremely low for a while.
Fishing for stocked trout in the low elevation rivers will be slow due to the cold water conditions. Fishing may improve some later today when the water is warmer. Nymphs will work best for you.
Fly fishing for smallmouth bass in the lowland rivers is slow due to the cold water.
There are generation schedules you can work with today at some dams. Most of the breaks will occur this afternoon. Visit the TVA website from the links below to see what tailwater fishing options you have today.
