Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:46 am, the temperature is 50 degrees.
Rain fell in the Tennessee River Valley yesterday. Rainfall reported at the Knoxville Airport was a quarter of an inch. Rain reported at a Townsend private weather station amounted to .15 inches.
There is a 90% chance for showers and possibly a thunderstorm today. The high temperature will be in the middle 60’s falling to the middle 50’s overnight. Showers will move through tomorrow again, with a high in the middle 60’s. It will be breezy tomorrow.
Little River is flowing at 124 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.71 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 208 cfs. The water temperature is 46.2 degrees this morning.
Some streams in the Smokies have risen but most are receding now. There has been only a slight change in the Little Pigeon River at the Sevierville Gauge. Other streams that are flowing higher are:
Oconaluftee River flowing at 273 cfs, compared to median flow of 389 cfs for this date.
Tellico River is flowing higher at 142 cfs compared to median flow of 153 cfs for this date.
Cataloochee Creek is flowing at 50.0 cfs compared to median flow of 69 cfs.
Water temperatures are chilly this morning at all elevations but we will see some warming today and tomorrow. And, we should see higher flows due to more rain that is predicted. If you go fishing in the mountains today, nymphs will likely work best for you.
Fishing is improving in the stocked trout rivers as the water warms and flows increase. Nymphs will probably work best.
There are generation schedules at some dams you can work with today for angling on the tailwaters below. In fact, I saw some very interesting and unanticipated schedules. Check the TVA website to see what tailwater fishing opportunities you have today.
Walter Babb will be conducting a Free Fly Tying Demonstration at the shop today between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm. Almost everyone has heard of Walter. He is a fly fishing legend in the Southern Appalachians. Walter will be tying trout flies that are his favorite patterns. This event is FREE. All you have to do is show up.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
