Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:33 am, the temperature is 38 degrees.
Today will be mostly sunny and cool with a high temperature in the low 50’s. There is a 50% chance for rain and snow showers overnight with a low temperature in the low 30’s.
Tomorrow will be colder with a high in the low 40’s dropping to the middle 20’s overnight.
The mountains are under a winter weather advisory beginning tonight and extending through Wednesday. At Newfound Gap, 2 to 4 inches of snowfall is predicted tonight with a low temperature in the upper 20’s. Another 1 to 3 inches of snow is possible tomorrow with a high temperature around 30 degrees.
Little River is flowing at 199 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.99 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 216 cfs. The water temperature is 46.0 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the mountains are flowing near normal for this date. Water temperatures are below the trout’s preferred range. If you go today, wait a while for the water temperatures to bottom out and begin to rise. Fish in the lower elevations where the water is warmer. Weighted nymphs will probably work best.
Fishing for stocked trout will be best later today when the water is warmer though you might do fairly well early. Nymphs or other sub-surface flies will work best.
There are generation schedules you can work with at a few dams today if you are hoping to fish on a tailwater. Check the TVA website to view the generation schedules at all TVA dams.
