Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:47 am, the temperature is 29 degrees.
Today will be mostly sunny and warm with a high temperature in the low 60’s. Temperatures will fall to the low to middle 40’s tonight and we have a 40% chance for rain.
Showers are likely tomorrow with a high temperature in the middle 60’s. Rain will continue to fall overnight with a low in the upper 40’s.
Showers and possibly thunderstorms will remain through the day on Sunday. The high temperature will be in the low 60’s. Temperatures will fall to the upper 20’s overnight and there is a chance for rain or snow.
Little River is flowing at 114 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.67 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 207 cfs. The water temperature is 40.3 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the Smokies are flowing below normal for this date. Water temperatures are below the trout’s preferred range this morning. We will see gradual warming today and through the weekend. Fishing will improve from a water temperature perspective. We may get heavy rain this weekend. There is a good chance the streams will be flowing high at some point.
If you go fishing in the mountains today, wait a while until the water is warmer. Fish in the low elevations where the water is warmer. Weighted nymphs will likely work best for you.
Fishing for stocked trout will improve as the rivers warm but there is the chance for heavy rain and high water this weekend.

We will be holding Free Fly Tying Demonstrations this weekend. Bob Stephan will be tying Saturday December 9th from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm. Bob is President of the Clinch River Chapter of Trout Unlimited. He is an excellent fly tyer and demonstrator.
Bob also organizes and teaches fly tying at the Chapter’s classes. The Chapter is holding a Intermediate Fly Tying Class beginning Saturday January 13th and running for 8 weeks through Saturday March 2nd. Rocky Cox will be demonstrating on Sunday December 10th from 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm. Rocky is a professional and very popular fly fishing guide with many years of experience. He floats clients down the Clinch River, Holston River, the Cumberland River in Kentucky and the Caney Fork in Middle Tennessee.
These fly tying demonstrations are Free. You do not need a reservation to attend. Just show up at the shop.
