Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:38 am, the temperature is 24 degrees.
It will be sunny today with a high temperature in the low 50’s, falling to the low 30’s tonight. Tomorrow will be sunny and somewhat warmer with a high in the middle 50’s and a low in the upper 20’s.
Little River is flowing at 436 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.55 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 284 cfs. The water temperature is 41.0 degrees and falling this morning.
Most streams in the mountains have receded back to near normal. Many are flowing higher than normal but at much better fishing levels than we saw earlier this week. Water temperatures are cold and falling this morning.
If you go fishing in the mountains, wait until later today when the water is warmer. Fish in the low elevations where the water is warmer. Weighted nymphs or nymph rigs will likely work best for you. Be careful wading. Some of the streams are swift.
Fishing will be best later today in the stocked trout streams. Nymphs and other sub-surface flies should work best.
There are breaks in the generation you can work with at some dams today. Most pauses appear to be scheduled early in the morning and this afternoon. If you are planning to do some tailwater angling today, visit the TVA website from the links below to make your plans.
Jack Gregory will be conducting a Free Fly Tying Demonstration at the shop on Saturday December 16th between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm. Jack’s family moved to Walland from Cades Cove decades ago. Jack grew up fly fishing in the Smokies. I have fly fished with Jack in many places for a lot of different species of fish. I have never fished with a better fisherman than Jack. He is also an incredible fly tyer. He is known for catching big brown trout in the mountains. You don’t want to miss this free demonstration. Just show up at the shop.
Oren Mead, his daughter Avery and LB Cummings will be conducting a free fly tying demonstration on Sunday December 17th from 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm. They will be here representing Project Healing Waters, a fly fishing organization founded in 2005 to serve wounded military service members returning from combat in Iraq and Afghanistan. Oren and Avery will be tying nymphs and midges. LB will be tying streamers and other patterns to target larger fish.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
