Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:42 am, the temperature is 41 degrees.
Today will be cloudy and breezy with a high temperature in the low 40’s. There is a slight chance for rain or snow showers this afternoon and early evening. The low temperature tonight will be in the upper teens.
Tomorrow will be sunny with a high in the low 40’s dropping to the low 20’s overnight.
Little River is flowing at 167 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.88 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 267 cfs. The water temperature is 46.4 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains are flowing lower than normal but at good fishing levels. The problem is, the streams are colder than the trout prefer making them lethargic. Stream temperatures probably will not rise at all today. They may fall. The higher elevations are under a Winter Weather Advisory. The high temperature predicted at Newfound Gap will be in 31 degrees. Newfound Gap Road is currently closed due to snow and ice.
If you go fishing in the Smokies today, be aware that it will be cold and windy. Fish in the low elevations where the water is warmer. Weighted nymph rigs will probably work best if they work at all.
Fishing for stocked trout in the low elevations may be fair today. Nymphs will work best.
If fly fishing on a tailwater is on your bucket list today there are a few choices. You may have to go early or late. It appears Norris Dam is back on a normal generation schedule as there is no announcement pertaining to the weir dam construction project on the TVA page. That is good news if it is true. If you plan to go fishing on a tailwater, check the TVA website from the links below to plan your day.
We had a busy weekend at the shop. That should continue this week.
We will be closed next Sunday and Monday (December 24th and 25th).
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
