Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:37 am, the temperature is 27 degrees.
Today will be sunny and chilly with a high temperature in the low 40’s dropping to the low 20’s tonight. Tomorrow will be mostly sunny with a high in the low 50’s and a low in the low 30’s overnight.
Little River is flowing at 151 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.82 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 243 cfs. The water temperature is 41.5 degrees and falling quickly.
Some streams in the mountains are flowing close to normal while most are flowing below normal. Normal in December is fairly high. Water temperatures are plunging this morning at all elevations.
If you go fishing in the Smokies today, fish in the low elevations where the water is warmer. Most trout will not be active due to the falling water temperatures. Nymphs and weighted nymph rigs are good choices.
Fishing for stocked trout in the low elevation rivers is fair. Fishing would be much better if the water were warmer. Nymphs are probably going to work best for you. If fishing is slow try downsizing to midges and lighter tippet.
There are some tailwater fishing options today. Check the TVA website from the links below to view the generation schedules and plan your tailwater fishing day.
Visitors are arriving to Townsend for the Christmas Holiday. Unless the weather pattern changes, a warming trend will continue this week through at least December 26th. Fishing should improve.
We will be closed next Sunday and Monday (December 24th and 25th).
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
