Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:47 am, the temperature is 22 degrees.
Today will be partly sunny with a high temperature around 50 degrees, dropping to the upper 20’s tonight. Tomorrow will be sunny with a high in the upper 50’s and a low in the middle 30’s. It will be warmer over the next few days and lasting through Christmas Day. We should see highs in the low 60’s Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
Little River is flowing at 132 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.74 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 232 cfs. The water temperature is 36.7 degrees and falling this morning.
Streams in the Smokies are flowing lower than normal. The streams are cold. They will warm somewhat later this week and early next week so fishing may improve. Fishing conditions in the Smokies are certainly not ideal right now.
If you go, fish in the low elevations where the water is warmer. Nymphs will work best for you. Use fine tippet and dress to blend with the forest. The cold water is very clear.
Fishing for stocked trout is slow to fair. Fishing will improve when the rivers warm. Nymphs, squirmy worms, egg patterns and other sub-surface flies will work best.
There are generation schedules on some tailwaters you can work with today. You will probably be fishing early or late depending on which river you choose. Check the schedules from the links below to plan your tailwater fishing day.
We will be closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. I will not be writing a Fishing Report either day. We will be back on December 26th then close on New Years Day.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
