Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:46 am, the temperature is 30 degrees.
The weather is improving. It is warmer and it will continue to become warmer through Christmas. Today will be partly sunny with a high in the upper 50’s and a low tonight in the low to middle 30’s. Tomorrow will be sunny with a high around 60 degrees and a low dipping to the middle to upper 30’s overnight. Sunday will be sunny with a high in the low 60’s and a low in the low 40’s.
Christmas day will be warm with a 90% chance for rain.
Little River is flowing at 119 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.69 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 254 cfs. The water temperature is 39.2 degrees this morning.
Streams in the Smokies are flowing lower than normal. The streams are still cold though they will warm some over the next few days. Fishing will improve.
If you go today, fish in the lower elevations where the water is warmer. Do everything possible to stay hidden from the trout. Weighted nymph rigs will probably work best.
Fishing for stocked trout in the low elevations will improve as the rivers warm. Nymphs, egg patterns, Squirmy Worms and other sub-surface flies are good choices.
There are many very good generation schedules planned today if fishing in a tailwater is your goal. Some pauses will occur in the morning with others in the afternoon, giving you many options. Check the TVA website to help you plan your tailwater fishing day.
Visitors are showing up for the Christmas Holiday. This will be a busy weekend in the Great Smoky Mountains gateway towns. The week between Christmas and New Years is always a high visitation time in the Smokies.
New Years weekend will be cold with a chance for snow next Friday.
We will be closed Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. I will not be writing a Fishing Report either day. We will be back on December 26th then close again on New Years Day.
After the New Year holiday, we will resume our Free Fly Tying Demonstrations on Saturdays and Sundays through the Winter.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
