Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:39 am, the temperature is 29 degrees.
It seems like every morning during the last few days, when I check the current temperature, it is colder than was predicted the day before. Today is no exception.
They say today will be sunny with a high temperature in the low 60’s, dropping to the upper 30’s tonight. Sunday will be warm with a high in the low 60’s and a low in the middle 40’s. Christmas day will be warm with a high in the low 60’s and a low overnight in the upper 40’s.
Rain showers will move into the area tomorrow night. Expect rain on Christmas Day and night. Showers are likely Tuesday.
Little River is flowing at 112 cubic feet per second or 1.66 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 264 cfs. The water temperature is 40.1 degrees this morning and steady.
Streams in the mountains are flowing low. The water is cold and clear. Trout are spooky. If you go today, fish in the low elevations where the water is warmer. Dress to blend with the forest and do everything possible to avoid being seen by the trout. Nymphs will likely work best for you.
Fishing should improve somewhat over the next two days due to warmer water conditions.
Fishing for stocked trout should be fair to good in the low elevations. Nymphs, egg patterns, Squirmy Worms and other sub-surface flies are good fly choices.
Generation schedules look pretty good for tailwater anglers at some dams today. Check the TVA pages below to plan your tailwater fishing day.
A lot of Americans are traveling and some ended up in Townsend for the holidays. We are seeing a lot of families from other areas along with local customers shopping for Christmas.
We will be open today until 6:00 pm. We will be closed tomorrow (Christmas Eve) and Monday (Christmas Day). I will not be writing the Fishing Report either day. We will be open Tuesday and ready for you.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
