Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:38 am, the temperature is 54 degrees.
We are back from the Christmas holidays and ready for work. It is much warmer and wetter since I wrote the last fishing report Saturday. The temperature outside is 54 degrees. We have had .18 inches of rain during the past 24 hours in Townsend.
The chance for showers continues today and tonight. We may get another quarter of an inch today or more. I just saw this on the National Weather Service site: “Locally heavy rain is possible today mainly along the Appalachians, so localized flash flooding is possible”. The high temperature will be in the middle 60’s with a low tonight in the middle 40’s.
Tomorrow will be mostly sunny with a high in the upper 50’s and a low in the low to middle 30’s overnight.
Little River is flowing at 117 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.68 feet on the gauge. The river is rising. Median flow for this date is 306 cfs. The water temperature is 49.8 degrees this morning and rising.
Other streams in the Smokies are rising somewhat quickly. Good examples are Oconaluftee River, Tellico River and Cataloochee Creek. Little Pigeon River is rising slowly at the Sevierville Gauge right now.
Rainfall amounts seem to have varied overnight. I don’t know how high the rivers will rise today. We don’t know how much rain we will get today. Heavy rain is possible.
If you plan to go fishing in the Smokies, check the USGS gauges before you go. The water will be fairly warm in the low elevations so fish there. Nymphs will likely work best though dry flies may produce too. You may see midges, blue wing olives and other aquatic insects on the water.
Fishing for stocked trout should be good today. Water temperatures in the low elevations are good. It is possible you may encounter high water. Check the gauges, forecast and weather radar before you go.
There are some very interesting generation schedules on the TVA website today. There are schedules you can work with at many dams. You should have no problem finding a tailwater to fish if you are wading or boating.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
