Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:49 am, the temperature is 49 degrees.
Today will be mostly cloudy with a high in the upper 50’s. Colder air is moving in later. Tonight’s low temperature will be in the middle 30’s. Tomorrow will be partly sunny with a high in the upper 40’s and a low in the upper 20’s.
Little River is flowing at 235 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.10 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 283 cfs. The water temperature is 51.3 degrees this morning.
Some streams in the mountains are flowing near normal while others are flowing higher than normal. Most appear to be flowing at good fishing levels. Water temperatures are within the trout’s preferred range in the low elevations.
If you go today, fish in the lower elevations where the water is warmer. Nymphs will likely work best but there is a chance for some dry fly activity too. Be on the lookout for hatches of blue wing olives, midges or other aquatic insects.
Fishing for stocked trout in the low elevations is good. Nymphs, egg patterns, Squirmy Worms and other sub-surface flies will produce for you.
There are generation schedules you can work with at some dams today. In some cases, the pauses will occur this afternoon which can be a challenge to plan around when fishing on the tailwater below. Check the TVA website to see what tailwater fishing options you have .
We were super busy at the shop yesterday. There are still many visitors in town and a lot of local residents were out and about.
The fly tying department was extremely busy. Fly tying season is in high gear.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
