Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:49 am, the temperature is 36 degrees.
It will be mostly cloudy today with a high temperature in the low 40’s dropping to the upper 20’s tonight. We have a slight chance for snow showers today. Some roads in the Smokies are temporarily closed due to ice and snow, including Newfound Gap Road and Laurel Creek Road.
Tomorrow will be sunny and warmer with a high in the middle 50’s and a low in the upper 20’s. New Year’s Day will be partly sunny with a high in the low 40’s and a low in the low 20’s.
Little River is flowing at 159 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.85 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 291 cfs. The water temperature is 41.7 degrees.
Streams in the Smokies are flowing lower than normal. The stream are cold, with temperatures below the trout’s preferred range. We won’t see the streams warm much today. If you go fishing in the mountains, fish in the low elevations with weighted nymphs. Don’t expect too much action today.
Fishing for stocked trout in the low elevations may be fair today. The trout may not be very active due to the cold water temperatures. If you go, try nymphs, midge pupa, egg patterns, squirmy worms or other sub-surface patterns.
You could fish on a tailwater today, that might be a good choice and you will find suitable flows at some dams. Check the TVA website from the links below to plan your day.
The shop will be open today from 9:00 am until 6 pm. We will be open tomorrow (New Year’s Eve) from 9:00 until 5:00. We will be closed Monday (New Year’s Day).
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
