Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:46 am, the temperature is 20 degrees.
It is cold this morning but we are in for a slight warming trend beginning today. Expect mostly sunny skies today with a high temperature around 50 degrees falling to the low to middle 30’s tonight. Rain will move into the region tonight. We should get between a quarter and a half of an inch.
Rain will continue to fall tomorrow with a high around 50 degrees and a low in the middle 30’s. Rainfall should amount to a quarter to a half of an inch.
Little River is flowing at 103 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 1.62 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 338 cfs. The water temperature is 36.7 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains are flowing low this morning as the drought in our region persists. We should see some improvement in the drought over the next two days. Trout are mostly inactive due to the cold water conditions. We will see slight improvement in water temperatures today and tomorrow.
If you go fishing in the Smokies, fish in the low elevations where the water is warmer. Nymphs will probably work best.
Fishing for stocked trout may be fair or better than that today. Fishing will be best later when the water is warmer. Try nymphs, midge pupa, egg patterns, Squirmy Worms or other sub-surface fly patterns.
There are good generation schedules at several dams today that will offer wading or boating tailwater anglers some options. Check the TVA site from the links below to see what tailwater opportunities you have today.
Marty Staton will be conducting a Free Fly Tying Demonstration tomorrow (Saturday January 6th) between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm. Marty is a fly fishing guide who works on the San Juan River in New Mexico. He began his guiding career in the Smokies years ago. Marty will be tying midge patterns he uses on the San Juan and other tailwaters.
Clayton Gist will be conducting another Free Fly Tying Demonstration on Sunday January 7th between 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm. Clayton will be tying his favorite tailwater trout flies.
You do not need a reservation to attend these Free fly tying demonstrations. Just show up at the shop.
