Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:52 am, the temperature is 41 degrees.
It will be mostly cloudy today with a high temperature in the low 40’s. There is a chance for light rain in the valley with possibly a wintery mix in the high elevations. Temperatures will fall into the middle to upper 20’s tonight.
Tomorrow will be mostly sunny with a high in the low 50’s and a low in the low 40’s.
Little River is flowing at 218 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.05 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 320 cfs. The water temperature is 43.7 degrees and steady.
Most streams in the Smokies are flowing higher thanks to the rain we got yesterday. Some streams are flowing very close to normal this morning. Water levels look good overall.
Water temperatures are steady and in the 40’s in the low elevations. While not ideal for trout activity, the water is warmer than it has been lately and it is moving in the right direction. I don’t think fishing will be good today but the conditions have improved so it could be fair. If you go, weighted nymph rigs will likely work best.
Fishing for stocked trout has been good. I just checked the Gatlinburg Trout Facility Facebook page and there are some very impressive trout being caught there. The water will be warmer today so fishing should be good or better. Nymphs and other sub-surface flies will work.
If you are thinking about fishing on a tailwater today, check the TVA website where you will find interesting generation schedules at some dams.
Clayton Gist will be conducting a Free Fly Tying Demonstration today (Sunday January 7th) between 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm. Clayton is an old friend of ours with a long history of fly fishing experiences. He is a tailwater trout expert. Clayton has been a very active member of the Clinch River Chapter of Trout Unlimited. He will be tying his favorite tailwater trout flies.
You do not need a reservation to attend. Just show up at the shop.
