Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:39 am, the temperature is 51 degrees.
The wind has been blowing and heavy rain has been falling since midnight. So far, .99 inches of rainfall has been recorded in Townsend.
The forecast today calls for a 100% chance for heavy rain and strong winds gusting to 55 miles per hour. The high temperature today will be around 60 degrees. It will be breezy tonight with a low around 30 degrees with a chance for rain and snow showers.
Strong winds gusts up to 85 miles per hour are predicted in the mountains. Little River Road from Sugarlands Visitors Center to Metcalf Bottoms is temporarily closed due to downed trees. Newfound Gap Road may still be closed. The road was closed January 6th and is not reported to be re-opened. Maybe that is an oversight. I don’t know.
Tomorrow will be cloudy and windy with a high in the middle 40’s.
Little River is flowing at 205 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.01 feet on the gauge. The river is rising. The water temperature is 41.9 degrees and rising.
Most streams in the mountains are rising. With the ongoing chance for heavy rain and possible localized flooding, there is a high chance the rivers will be flowing too high to safely wade today. You probably don’t want to be in the mountains today due to the high winds anyway.
You might try fishing in the stocked streams today. The rivers may be flowing high and stained. That is probably not a good idea. The West Prong of the Little Pigeon in Gatlinburg is rising quickly right now.
You could fish on a tailwater if you don’t mind fishing in the rain and wind. There are generation schedules you can work with at a few dams today. Check the TVA website to see what options you have.
Honestly, I don’t think this is a good fishing day.
We have some great Free Fly Tying Demonstrations lined up for you this coming weekend. Jack Gregory will be back Saturday and demonstrating between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm. Jack is a well-known local angler. He and I have fished together a lot in fresh and salt water, and I consider him to be the best fisherman I know.
Bob Stephan will be demonstrating Sunday January 14th from 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm. Bob is President of the Clinch River Chapter of Trout Unlimited and is a very skilled fly tyer and angler. He is also a very active fly tying instructor.
You do not need a reservation to attend. Just show up at the shop.

Taking one of these classes will give you a huge jump start into the wonderful hobby of fly tying.
