Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:42 am, the temperature is 24 degrees.
It will be sunny today with a high temperature in the middle 50’s, dropping to the lower 30’s tonight.
Tomorrow will be windy with rain showers likely. We are under a wind advisory tomorrow and tomorrow night. The high temperature will be in the upper 50’s with a low in the middle 20’s overnight.
The weekend will be mostly sunny and cold.
Little River is flowing at 966 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 3.25 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 312 cfs. The water temperature is 41.5 degrees this morning.
Though streams in the Smokies have receded considerably, most are still flowing high. Some are likely fishable but you should be careful wading. The water temperatures are below the trout’s preferred range. We will see some warming of the streams over the next couple of days.
If you go fishing in the Smokies, weighted nymph rigs will probably work best for you. Fish in the lower elevations where the water is warmer.
Fishing for stocked trout in the low elevations will be fair and maybe better than that. Wading in most of these rivers will be challenging. Be careful. I would plan on standing in safe water casting weighted nymph rigs and possibly streamers.
There are fairly long to long periods of no generation scheduled today at several dams. You should not have a problem finding time to fish on a tailwater today. Check the TVA website from the links below to see what your options are.
We have some great Free Fly Tying Demonstrations lined up for you this coming weekend. Jack Gregory will be back Saturday and demonstrating between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm. Jack is a well-known local angler. He and I have fished together a lot in fresh and salt water, and I consider him to be the best fisherman I know.
Bob Stephan will be demonstrating Sunday January 14th from 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm. Bob is President of the Clinch River Chapter of Trout Unlimited and is a very skilled fly tyer and angler. He is also a very active fly tying instructor.
You do not need a reservation to attend. Just show up at the shop.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
