Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:40 am, the temperature is 27 degrees.

We are under a high wind warning today. Winds could gust as high as 65 miles per hour. We can expect rain today with new precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible. The high temperature will be in the upper 50’s.

There is a chance for rain tonight possibly changing to snow flurries with a low temperature in the middle 20’s.

Saturday will be sunny and breezy with a high in the low 40’s dropping to the middle 20’s overnight.

Sunday will be sunny with a high in the upper 30’s.

Little River is flowing at 570 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.77 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 320 cfs. The water temperature is 41.4 degrees.

Streams in the Smokies are receding closer to normal. Water temperatures are below the trout’s preferred range. It may be very windy today, with the potential for downed trees and limbs. This is probably not a good day to be fishing in the mountains.

Fishing for stocked trout in the lower elevations may be fair today. Wait until later when the water is warmer. Stand in safe water casting weighted nymphs, egg patterns, Squirmy Worms or streamers.

We are blessed with many tailwaters to fish in East Tennessee and there are several opportunities today thanks to some favorable generation schedules. It will be windy, possibly very windy. That is enough to keep me off the water but I know some of you will be fishing.  

We have some great Free Fly Tying Demonstrations lined up for you this coming weekend. Jack Gregory will be back Saturday January 13th and demonstrating between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm. Jack is a well-known local angler who grew up fly fishing in the Smokies.

Bob Stephan will be demonstrating Sunday January 14th from 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm. Bob is President of the Clinch River Chapter of Trout Unlimited and is a very skilled fly tyer and angler. He is also a very active fly tying instructor.   

You do not need a reservation to attend. Just show up at the shop.

We are hold two all-day Beginner Fly Tying Classes on Saturday January 27th and Saturday February 17th. Taking one of these classes will give you a huge jump start into the wonderful hobby of fly tying. The class costs $100, which includes all the materials you will need for the day and the use of our vises and tools. We will also provide lunch for you.
