Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:09 am, the temperature is 30 degrees.
We got a dusting of snow overnight. Right now, the roads at our house are fine. They are just wet.
Snow and rain showers are predicted today with a high temperature in the low 30’s. New snow accumulations of 2 to 4 inches are possible.
Snow is likely tonight possibly mixed with sleet. The low temperature will be in the middle teens.
Tomorrow will be mostly cloudy with a high in the middle to upper 20’s.
Some roads in Great Smoky Mountains National Park are closed including Little River, Laurel Creek, Cades Cove Loop and Upper Tremont.
Little River is flowing at 353 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.39 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 288 cfs. The water temperature is 39.6 degrees this morning.
Most streams in the Smokies are flowing near normal for this date. Water temperatures are below the trout’s preferred range at all elevations. Water temperatures will fall this week into the lower 30’s. Fishing will be slow this week in the free flowing rivers.
Fishing on a tailwater might be a good option today. The TVA website is down right now so if you decide to go, hopefully the site will be up and running later so you can view the generation schedules.
Brothers Steve & Tom Brown will be conducting a Free Fly Tying demonstration next Saturday between 10:00 am and 2:00 pm. Steve has been living in the Knoxville area for many years and is very active in the Clinch River Chapter of Trout Unlimited. Tom moved here from Virginia where he retired from Orvis.
Fly fishing guide Rob Fightmaster will be demonstrating Sunday January 21st between 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm. Rob is an excellent guide who works in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. He has come up with some very effective Smokies fly patterns he will share with you.
