Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:40 am, the temperature in Townsend is 49 degrees.
Showers are likely today and tonight with a high in the middle 60’s and a low tonight in the low 50’s. It will be breezy today and tonight.
It will be windy and wet tomorrow with a high in the low 60’s dropping to the middle 30’s overnight.
Sunday will be sunny and cooler with a high in the low 50’s and a low in the upper 20’s.
Little River is flowing at 745 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.97 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 382 cfs. The water temperature is 51.8 degrees.
Streams in the mountains are all flowing higher than normal. Wading will be limited in some streams today. With more rain on the way, we may see streams rise further today and through tomorrow. Water temperatures are will within the trout’s preferred range but the water will cool tomorrow night through Sunday.
If you go today, stand in safe water casting nymphs, weighted nymph rigs or streamers. If you see a hatch, switch to dry flies or wet flies. You may see Quill Gordons, Blue Quills, Blue Wing Olives or other aquatic insects.
Fishing for stocked trout will be fair but wading may be limited and you might encounter rising water at some point today or tomorrow.
There are short and long breaks in the generation scheduled at several dams today. Fishing on a tailwater might be a great idea. Check the TVA website for the latest updated generation schedules and hopefully plan a tailwater fishing day.
Spring is coming on. The peepers are loud every morning and evening at our house. Actually these small tree frogs are called Spring Peepers. Their mating season has begun. It sounds like there are millions of them out there.
The flowering trees have flowered. Wildflowers have bloomed and there are more to come.
The long term weather forecast indicates we will have some cold nights, in the 30’s, and some warmer nights, through March 22nd.
We are holding a beginner fly tying class on Saturday March 23rd and I think there are some openings. The cost of the all-day class is $100, which includes all materials, use of our tools and lunch. To book your spot call the shop at 865-448-9459.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
