Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:48 am, the temperature in Townsend is 61 degrees.
Violent strong winds blew overnight. Power went off at our house but is now restored. I’ll see the damage after daybreak.
I checked the Park Service Roads Twitter page this morning and I did not see any road closings due to downed trees. That could occur later.
This is going to be a rainy and windy day. The high temperature will be 62 degrees. We could get a half of an inch of rain today. The low temperature tonight will be in the low to middle 30’s.
Tomorrow will be mostly sunny with a high in the low 50’s followed by a low overnight in the upper 20’s.
Little River is flowing at 793 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 3.03 feet on the gauge. The river is rising. Median flow for this date is 356 cfs. The water temperature is 52.3 degrees this morning.
All streams that have USGS gauge sites are rising. Some are rising quickly. They are flowing higher to considerably higher than normal.
You are probably going to find high water everywhere in the mountains today. Safe wading will be limited. If you go, stand in safe water casting nymphs or streamers.
Fishing for stocked trout in the low elevation rivers will likely be slow today due to high water conditions. If you go, be careful wading. Nymphs or streamers will work best.
Fishing for trout on a tailwater may be a better option today. There are long breaks in the generation scheduled at several dams. Norris Dam is not one of them. Visit the TVA website to see what tailwater fishing options you have today.
We are holding a beginner fly tying class on Saturday March 23rd and I think there are some openings. The cost of the all-day class is $100, which includes all materials, use of our tools and lunch. To book your spot call the shop at 865-448-9459.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
