Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 6:25 am, the temperature in Townsend is 28 degrees.
It rained off an on yesterday, with the total amounting to .59 inches in Townsend. It looks like the rain is over for a few days.
The Park Service temporarily closed Highway 441 (Newfound Gap Road) between Gatlinburg and Cherokee late yesterday due to Winter weather. The high temperature at Newfound Gap is predicted to be 37 degrees today. The mountains are under a wind advisory today. The high today may reach 30 degrees at Mount Leconte with wind chill values between 5 and 14.
Today will be sunny with a high temperature around 50 degrees in the lower elevations, dropping to the high 20’s tonight.
Tomorrow will be sunny and warmer with a high near 60 and a low in the low 30’s.
It should remain dry until Friday. It will also be much warmer later this week.
Little River is flowing at 1,180 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 3.51 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 377 cfs. The water temperature is 48.9 degrees and falling.
Streams in the Smokies are flowing higher than normal. Many are flowing too high to safely wade. Some streams are still rising this morning, including Little River. Water temperatures are plunging. What we have are certainly not ideal fishing conditions in the mountains. If you go, stand in safe water casting weighted nymphs or streamers.
Fly fishing for stocked trout in the low elevation rivers is going to be difficult in some cases due to high water. And, water temperatures are falling. If you go, stand in safe water casting nymphs or streamers.
There are breaks in the generation planned at a few dams today, including Wilbur, Dale Hollow, South Holston and Chatuge. There is even a long break at Wolf Creek Dam in Kentucky, which is unusual. Before heading out for your tailwater fly fishing day, check the generation schedules on the TVA website from the links below. I occasionally talk to customers who don’t know this information is available. They are usually new to the area.
We are getting an unwanted break in the Spring-like weather we have enjoyed lately. That won’t last long.
We are holding a beginner fly tying class on Saturday March 23rd and I think there are some openings. The cost of the all-day class is $100, which includes all materials, use of our tools and lunch. To book your spot call the shop at 865-448-9459.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
