Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 5:05 am, the temperature in Townsend is 28 degrees.
It is frosty now but today will become sunny with a high temperature in the upper 50’s falling to the middle 30’s overnight.
Tomorrow will be sunny and warmer with a high in the middle to upper 60’s and falling to the low 40’s overnight.
Wednesday will be sunny with a high in the loe 70’s and a low in the middle 40’s.
Little River is flowing at 992 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 3.26 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 355 cfs. The water temperature is 44.1 degrees and falling.
Streams in the mountains are flowing higher than normal for this date. Some are flowing quite a bit higher, and too high to safely wade. The streams are also cold and the water temperatures are falling this morning. The rivers are receding and the water temperatures will be warming over the next few days. Fishing will improve. If you go today, fish in the lower elevations where the water is warmer. Stand in safe water casting weighted nymphs or nymph rigs.
Fishing for stocked trout might be fair at best today. Many of the rivers that are stocked are flowing high and the water is cold. If you go, be careful wading. Stand in safe water casting nymphs and streamers.
TVA and the Corps will be generating all day and many of their dams. I did see breaks in the generation this afternoon at a few dams. Check the schedules at Wilbur, Wolf Creek, Tims Ford and Dale Hollow dams. Maybe you can squeeze in some tailwater fishing today.
We changed back to Daylight Savings Time and I overslept. That happens every time. I do not use an alarm clock. I normally wake up at 4:00 am and get up at 4:30. Not today. I normally drive to work at the shop at 7:00 am. Now, when I drive to work, it will be dark again. Obviously I don’t look forward to springing forward but eventually I’ll get used to it.
We are holding a beginner fly tying class on Saturday March 23rd and I think there are still some openings. The cost of the all-day class is $100, which includes all materials, use of our tools and lunch. To check on availability and hopefully book your spot call the shop at 865-448-9459.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
