Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:57 am, the temperature in Townsend is 28 degrees.
Warmer air is moving into the Smokies. We will see the streams warm to well within the trout’s preferred temperature range over the next few days.
Today will be sunny with a high in the upper 60’s and a low in the low 40’s.
Tomorrow will be sunny with a high in the low 70’s and a low in the middle to upper 40’s.
Thursday will be sunny with a high around 80 degrees dropping to the middle 50’s overnight.
Little River is flowing at 738 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.96 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 345 cfs. The water temperature is 44.4 degrees this morning.
Streams in the Smokies are all still flowing higher than normal but they are slowly receding. Some streams are flowing higher than many anglers prefer and wading is limited in many. If you go today, stand in safe water casting nymphs, weighted nymph rigs or streamers. You may see hatches of Quill Gordons, Blue Quills or Blue Wing Olives. These hatches will be sporadic if they appear at all.
Fishing for stocked trout in the low elevation rivers is improving as the water levels fall and the rivers warm. We will see more improvement by tomorrow. Try nymphs, egg patterns, Squirmy Worms or streamers.
TVA and the Corps will be running generators at most dams all day. They are spilling at Wilbur Dam. There are some exceptions with possible tailwater fishing opportunities for wading anglers. If you are boating there are more options. Check the TVA website to determine what tailwater fishing options are available for you.
Our March Beginner Fly Tying Class has filled. We will be scheduling another class in late April. These fly tying classes are very popular and fill quickly after we announce them.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
