Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:49 am, the temperature in Townsend is 60 degrees.
I heard thunder at 4:00 am. By 4:15 it was pouring. The rain and storms will linger until this afternoon. A few thunderstorms may contain high winds and heavy rain. The high temperature today will be around 70 degrees, falling to around 50 tonight.
Tomorrow will be mostly sunny with a high near 70 and a low in the middle 40’s overnight.
Sunday will be partly sunny with a high in the low 60’s and a low in the low to middle 30’s.
Little River is flowing at 406 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.42 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 321 cfs. The water temperature is 52.7 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains are flowing close to normal and at good fishing levels. That may change depending on how much rain we get and where. Tellico River is already rising quickly. Other streams will likely follow. Water temperatures are excellent in the low elevations.
If you go fishing in the Smokies today, keep an eye on the USGS flow gauges. If you are fishing watch for quickly rising water. Nymphs, wet flies and dry flies should all work for you today. Fish in the lower elevations where the water is warmer. This is going to be a nice weekend. I hope the streams levels are good for fishing.
Fishing for stocked trout is good. That could also be spoiled by heavy rain and rising water today. Nymphs or other sub-surface flies are good choices.
TVA and the Corps will be generating almost all day at every dam I checked this morning. You could go early and position yourself downstream to fish until the water rises below some dams. If you are boating there are more options. Check the TVA schedules before you go.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
