Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:55 am, the temperature in Townsend is 39 degrees.
The mountains are under a “Wind Advisory” today with a “Wind Warning” issued for tonight and tomorrow. Wind gusts of up to 80 miles per hour are possible tonight and tomorrow. Wind gusts of up to 50 miles per hour a possible today. Humidity will be low so there is an elevated chance for fires.
Today will be partly sunny with a high near 69 degrees falling to the upper 40’s overnight.
Rain returns tomorrow and it will be breezy. The high will be in the middle 60’s with a low in the upper 40’s overnight.
Wednesday will be mostly sunny with a high in the low 70’s.
Little River is flowing at 368 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.34 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 356 cfs. The water temperature is 48.0 degrees this morning.
Streams in the Smokies are flowing at good fishing levels. Water temperatures will rise into the trout’s preferred range today. Fishing should be good in the mountains.
Trout will be taking dry flies, wet flies or nymphs.
Fishing for stocked trout is good in the low elevations. Nymphs, egg patterns, squirmy worms and streamers are good fly choices.
There are many tailwater fishing opportunities available today. The turbines will be turned off at different times at several dams today, including Apalachia, Cherokee, Douglas, Norris, Dale Hollow, South Holston, Tims Ford and Chatuge. TVA will be sluicing at Wilbur Dam. Check the TVA website to find out when and where tailwater flows will be ideal for wading or boating today.
Except for the wind, this should be a good fishing day.
I was off yesterday and did nothing but relax at home watching college basketball games. Outside, behind our house, wild turkeys spent the day. There were always three old Toms and a group of hens hanging out almost every time I looked outside, between 10 feet and 50 feet away. The Toms were almost always puffed up, fanned out and strutting, trying to impress the girls. This is the mating season for wild turkeys.
At one point, several hens and another Tom walked into the scene. The invading Tom gobbled right in the face of one of the three Toms. The two other Toms ran over and a fight ensued. I didn’t take long for the three males to chase off the threatening Tom. He waited in the forest for his group of hens to rejoin him.
March Madness at our house includes watching turkeys and basketball. The big highlight for me yesterday was watching four 20+ pound birds fighting.
Have a great day and thank you for being here with us.
