Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:51 am, the temperature in Townsend is 40 degrees.
Today will be sunny and breezy with a high temperature in the middle 70’s, falling to the low 50’s tonight. Winds could gust a high as 25 miles per hour. Relative humidity is very low, so there is a risk for wildfires through the day.
Tomorrow will be sunny and warm with a high around 80 degrees and a low in the low 60’s.
The Park Service website still indicates Laurel Creek Road, Cades Cove Loop Road, Cades Cove Campground and Upper Tremont Road are closed due to downed trees.
Yesterday, an article on the WBIR website (CLICK HERE) reported Laurel Creek Road, Cades Cove Campground and the Cades Cove Loop Road will re-open this morning. There is no mention of Upper Tremont Road, so I assume it will still be closed today.
Little River is flowing at 299 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.18 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 361 cfs. The water temperature is 50.2 degrees this morning.
Streams in the mountains are flowing below normal but at very good fishing levels. Water temperatures are within the trout’s preferred range this morning in the low elevations. The streams will be trending warmer through the weekend. I would still fish in the lower elevations where the water is warmer. Fishing is good.
Trout are taking dry flies, nymphs and wet flies. There are many different species of aquatic insects on the water and you may see sporadic hatches. Try to match what you see if that happens.
Fishing for stocked trout is good. I talked to a customer yesterday who did very well in Gatlinburg.
If you are planning to fish on a tailwater, take your pick from a long list of dams that will have angler friendly flows today. Today is a tailwater angler’s dream whether you are wading or boating. Visit the TVA website from the links below to plan your tailwater fishing day.
We will be closed tomorrow, Easter Sunday. I will not be writing a fishing report. I think fishing will be very good tomorrow.
