Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:51 am, the temperature in Townsend is 69 degrees.
The day will start cloudy with clearing later. The high temperature will be around 80 degrees, dropping to the low 60’s tonight.
Tomorrow will be partly sunny with a high in the low 80’s with a chance for showers and thunderstorms through the day and overnight. Rainfall may be heavy. The low temperature overnight will be in the middle 40’s. It will be breezy tomorrow and overnight.
Little River is flowing at 260 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.08 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 383 cfs. The water temperature is 55.2 degrees.
Streams in the mountains are flowing lower than normal but at good fishing levels. Stream temperatures are well within the trout’s preferred range at most elevations.
Trout are actively feeding. Nymphs, dry flies or wet flies will produce for you. A dry fly with a nymph or wet fly dropper is a good combination to try. Unless there is a significant hatch, fly choice is less important than stealth and presentation.
Fishing for stocked trout in the low elevation rivers is good. The conditions are perfect.
Smallmouth bass are likely becoming active in the low land rivers now that the rivers have warmed somewhat. I have not heard anything from customers but the bass’ activity is water temperature dependent, and the threshold has been met. Nymphs and streamers will likely work best.
It is close to the time for the white bass run. That normally occurs in mid-April. The bass will run up the rivers to spawn. White streamers are the best fly choice. A lot of anglers use small Clouser Minnows.
There are generation pauses planned at many dams in the region today. Tailwater anglers, whether wading of boating have many options. Check the TVA website to view the generation schedules to plan your tailwater fishing day.
