Welcome to the Fishing Report from Townsend, Tennessee in the Great Smoky Mountains. At 4:45 am, the temperature in Townsend is 39 degrees.
It will be mostly cloudy today and tonight with a high in the low 50’s and a low tonight in the low to middle 30’s.
Tomorrow will be sunny and warmer with a high in the low 60’s dropping to the low to middle 30’s overnight.
Sunday will be sunny and warm with a high in the low to middle 70’s and a low around 50 degrees.
Little River is flowing at 295 cubic feet per second (cfs) or 2.17 feet on the gauge. Median flow for this date is 352 cfs. The water temperature is 46.7 degrees and falling.
Streams in the mountains are flowing at very good fishing levels and slightly lower than normal. The water is cold, even in the low elevations and still falling this morning. The water temperature at Cataloochee Creek is currently 43.9 degrees and at Little River in Townsend the number is 46.7 degrees. At the Birdtown North Carolina gauge on Oconaluftee River the temperature is 45.7 degrees and falling.
Fishing may be slow today in the Smokies due to the cool water temperatures. Fishing will be best when the water temperatures bottom out and begin to rise. If you go, go late and fish in the low elevations where the water is warmer.
Fly fishing for stocked trout will be fair to good today. Stocked trout feeding activity is less affected by cool water temperatures.
Whether you are fishing in the mountains or low elevation free flowing streams, nymphs or other weighted flies will probably work best.
There will be breaks in the generation at almost every dam today. This will be a good tailwater fishing day for wading or boating anglers. Check the predicted flows on your favorite tailwater on the TVA website from the links below.
